Jamesburg Schools' Landscaping Project
The Jamesburg Public Schools have taken upon a new initiative. Bleak and dreary conditions
at each of the schools have warranted a need for a cleanup. However, current funding does
not support this. In order to save money, the Borough of Jamesburg is cooperatively
maintaining the lawns at each school rather than have the school hire a landscaping company.
In response to these limiting factors, the Jamesburg Schools' Landscaping Project was developed
by Superintendent Shirley Bzdewka.
The first phase of the landscaping project has already been started. At the Grace M.
Breckwedel Middle School, the grass in front of the "newer" wing of the building has been
transformed into a viable and green space filled with mulch, mums, small shrubs, and other
plants. This project was completed on Saturday, October 4, 2003 - completely by voluneers.
Jamesburg is a volunteer-based community. Parents, school officials, local businesses,
and our local government work together to create solutions and make our community a better
place to live, work, and learn. Our schools depend on donations. For this project, many
residents, parents, and children donated their time. Some gracious people donated money
to buy plants and supplies. One local nursery even offered plants at half price. The Borough
of Jamesburg donated the mulch and manpower to distribute it. Even Mayor Tony LaMantia
pitched in to help beautify our schools.
At the John F. Kennedy Elementary School, a section of landscaping was completed between the
retaining wall and building. The area was overgrown with weeds and unattractive. The area
is now host to plants and flowers. It is believed that people appreciate and respect
an inviting environment. By relandscaping our schools, we are brightening our children's
future and making them feel more comfortable in school.
There is still more landscaping that needs to be done to fully beautify our schools. In
order to complete it, the Borough of Jamesburg must come together once again as it always
does. Future plans include planting trees in front of the "newer" wing of GMB and
relandscaping the older side of the building. However, without community support, this
dream cannot be achieved. If any residents and businesses would like to donate their time,
supplies, or money to support our future endeavors and beautify our schools and community,
contact the GMB School at 732-521-0303 or e-mail the Superintendent:
